TUBA STENTORO-PHONICA.
D 2
A decorative horizontal band of floral ornaments separates the header from the title section.
I. In a storm, or on a dark night, when two ships dare not come so close to one another as to be heard by any man’s ordinary voice; I believe it may be of great use, that by this instrument they may with great ease speak and converse together at a distance of half a mile or a mile, or more if necessary, especially if they take turns to use the advantage of the wind. And if the wind be so strong that only one of the ships has the opportunity of speaking with the wind at its back, the other may answer by signs, though speaking directly against it.
II. In a storm, it is of great use within a single ship, so that one man’s voice giving orders for governing and steering the vessel may be heard distinctly by all the sailors. His Majesty Refers to King Charles II of England (reigned 1660–1685), who was a patron of the Royal Society and deeply interested in naval technology., who perfectly understands all maritime affairs, is so aware of this that he has already given orders for some of these instruments of a smaller size (judging them most useful) to be made and placed onto several of his Royal Ships. And it is believed that when their use becomes more publicly known, few ships (whether warships or merchant ships) will go to sea without them.
III. In calm weather, an Admiral The commander of a fleet. may give orders to his entire fleet, even if they are spread out over two or three miles, without having to send out boats and messengers from ship to ship.
IV. In cases requiring great speed, orders may be given from forts such as the Castle of Deal A coastal fortification in Kent, England, built by Henry VIII to protect the strategic anchorage known as the Downs., etc., to any or all of the ships anchored in the road term: road; a sheltered area of water near the shore where ships can ride at anchor, less enclosed than a harbor.. And if the matter is a secret, it may be spoken in Cypher term: cypher; a secret code or system of signals previously agreed upon to prevent enemies from understanding the message., having been agreed upon beforehand between the Governor of the castle and the Admiral or chief commander aboard those ships.
I. In the event that a town or city is besieged and so closely surrounded that no messenger can be sent in; by using this instrument at a distance of one, two, or three miles, the inhabitants may be told that relief is coming, what its size is, when they should expect it, and how they should behave upon its arrival. This can be achieved by speaking in Cypher,
Loud-Speaking Trumpet (Tuba Stentoro-Phonica), maritime affairs, warships, merchant ships, Admiral, Castle of Deal, besieged, code (cypher).
