Ma. That which gave to the Large three Longs, for in both Mood, Time, and Prolation, that they term perfect which goeth by three: as the great Mood is perfect when three longs go to the large. The less Mood is perfect when three briefs go to the long: and time is perfect when three semibreves go to the brief. And his sign is thus. O 3
Franchinus, Glareanus, Lossius.
A musical notation diagram demonstrates the great Mood perfect. Three long notes are grouped by a bracket leading to a single large note. The mensural sign "O 3" is printed to the left of the bracket.
Phi. Which Mood did they term, the great one imperfect?
Ma. That which gave to the Large but two Longs. His sign is thus, C 3
Franchinus op.mus. it. trac. 3. cap. 2. Lossius, lib. 2. cap 4. Peter Aron Tuscanello.
A musical notation diagram demonstrates the great Mood imperfect. Two long notes are grouped by a bracket leading to a single large note. The mensural sign "C 3" is printed to the left of the bracket.
Phi. What did they call the lesser Mood?
Ma. That mood which measured the Longs by Briefs, and is either perfect or unperfect. The less Mood perfect was when the Long contained three Briefs, and his sign is thus O 2
A musical notation diagram demonstrates the less Mood perfect. Three breve notes are grouped by a bracket leading to a single long note. The mensural sign "O 2" is printed to the left of the bracket.
The less Mood unperfect is, when the Long containeth but two Briefs. And his sign is thus: C 2
A musical notation diagram demonstrates the less Mood unperfect. Two breve notes are grouped by a bracket leading to a single long note. The mensural sign "C 2" is printed to the left of the bracket.
Phi. What called they time?
Ma. The dimension of the Brief by Semibreves: and is likewise perfect or unperfect. Perfect time is, when the Brief containeth three semibreves. His signs are these, ʘ 3 Ͼ 3 ʘ
A musical notation diagram demonstrates perfect time. Two sets of three semibreve notes are each grouped by brackets leading to breve notes. Below the brackets are the mensural signs for perfect time: a circle with a dot and the number 3, a semi-circle with a dot and the number 3, and a circle with a central dot.
The time unperfect is, when the Brief containeth but two semibreves, whose signs are these: O 2 C 2 C
A musical notation diagram demonstrates unperfect time. Two sets of two semibreve notes are each grouped by brackets leading to breve notes. Below the brackets are the mensural signs for imperfect time: a circle with the number 2, a semi-circle with the number 2, and a semi-circle (C).
