Cauere to beware when it is joined with the accusative is "to avoid," as vitium caueo I avoid vice. When it is with the ablative, it is "to provide for," as lege cautum est it is provided by law, and mediated by a preposition, as ab hoste cauendum est one must beware of the enemy.
Calumniari and cavillare to calumniate/quibble do not differ; they signify to allege false crimes or to harass others in lawsuits through fraud and lies for the sake of winning. Hence Calumnia calumny, that is, fraud and deceit.
