A formal engraved portrait of Benedictus Spinoza. He is depicted from the chest up, facing slightly left but looking toward the viewer. He has shoulder-length, dark, curly hair, a thin mustache, and dark eyes. He is dressed in a dark doublet with a prominent white rectangular collar (rabat). The portrait is set within a rectangular frame against a cross-hatched background. Below the image is an architectural plinth or tablet containing the subject's name in capital letters. The entire composition is framed by a broad border consisting of a dense, repeating pattern of short vertical and horizontal hatch marks.
H. Lips sculptured this.
