I have placed for nearly eight weeks a glass of the width of two fingers, filled in part with vinegar, and indeed left open, in my study: and after this time had passed, I discovered infinite particles of salt swimming on its surface, which, when contemplated, I was able to clearly perceive what I had not hitherto been able to detect, namely, that these saline shapes are endowed with a cavity. For they appeared as clearly to my eyes in many parts of the salt as if they had fallen naked into the cavity of a boat or ship. With the passage of time, they had grown in thickness: I had some of them drawn that struck the eyes with their cavity, as Fig. G, G shows, and also some that appeared to view in part from the side, where similarly a part of their cavity could be seen, as Fig. H. I also took pains to have an adult and living little eel, of which there was a large number in vinegar,
