A finely detailed engraved portrait of the philosopher Benedictus Spinoza (1632–1677). He is shown in a three-quarter view, looking towards the viewer. He has shoulder-length, dark curly hair and is dressed in a dark doublet with a wide white collar (rabat). The portrait is set within a rectangular frame. Beneath the portrait is a rectangular plaque with the subject's name. The background of the entire engraving consists of a dense, cross-hatched pattern of short strokes.
