contraction is carried out: for whichever of these may happen, the motive fiber, rather than the muscle, is to be called the organ of animal motion.
How immediately joined fibrillae are understood.
When I say fibrillae are immediately joined, I do not understand their contact in such a way that every intermediate fluid is excluded, such that those fibrillae would become continuous rather than contiguous; but such as we see in mechanical things, when two cubes or any other two bodies are said to be imposed immediately upon one another, even if the ambient fluid is not entirely excluded. Thus, two flat mirrors that are moist are said to be imposed immediately upon each other, even if intermediate water separates the surface of each mirror, however small that water may be; this immediate imposition is called immediate contact, because there is no other intermediate solid.

2. FLESH is the middle part of the motive fiber, surrounded by transverse membranous fibrillae, soft, wide, thick, with a color varied in different animals; for in many it is reddish, in others ashen, in some white. I remember that I have seen both white and red muscles in the same foot of a Rabbit; I am speaking of raw flesh, since when cooked it is white in most.

A geometric diagram of a parallelepiped (a three-dimensional rectangular prism) shown in perspective. The vertices of the visible front and top faces are labeled with capital letters: A at the bottom left, B at the bottom right, C at the top left, and D at the top right. Internal dashed lines representing the hidden edges or internal structure are labeled with letters E, F, G, and H at various points.
