The following must be observed when reading the Palimpsest (A): single dots indicate single letters that cannot be read at all; a dot placed under a letter indicates that the letter is doubtful; letters that stand inside brackets cannot be read but are restored by conjecture; a straight line indicates that neither the number of letters nor their shapes can be read or conjectured in any way.
