This library is built in the open.
If you spot an error, have a suggestion, or just want to say hello — we’d love to hear from you.

Supported by favor until this day, one hopes for a port and refuge of fortune in these final times of literature. For there is no corner of the globe which your kindness and clemency toward those who cultivate letters has not reached: you, who are refined in every type of learning, deliver prudent judgment upon them, restore them to their brilliance, support them with every liberality, and exalt them to the highest degree, so that they may augur for themselves an eternal happiness with you presiding. Nor is destruction ever to be feared by them, where all things are conducted by such moderation of counsel, mildness, and strength of spirit on land and sea. Be easy, Best Prince, and if you wish, relax from serious matters toward affability, and turn your serene gaze hither. If there is nothing worthy of a royal view, it will at least be a consolation for an honest error that my obedience, to which fortune left nothing but a vow, did not displease. May you be happy for a long time.
May GOD grant this, and lead your thoughts with a happy outcome to the glory of the empire and the convenience of the Christian world.
