Author condemned and the work permitted original: "Author damnatus & op⁹ p'missu." This is a censorship mark from the Spanish Inquisition. It indicates that while Vossius was a Protestant author whose general works were restricted, this specific textbook on rhetoric was cleared for use.
UNIVERSITY OF SEVILLE FACULTAD DE DERECHO A library stamp from the Faculty of Law at the University of Seville.
A printer's mark for Joannes Maire depicts a man in a landscape digging the earth with a spade. A circular emblem surrounds him. At the top of the circle is the biblical citation Luke 13:8, which refers to a gardener asking to cultivate the soil around a barren tree to give it one more chance to bear fruit. The motto "DO AND HOPE" original: "FAC ET SPERA" is split on either side of the man. In the background, a building sits on a hill. A laurel wreath frames the entire device.
