It is a mistake no less ancient than it is poisonous, by which many mortals—and especially those who possess the most strength and wealth—persuade themselves, or, as I believe is more true, attempt to persuade others, that "just" and "unjust" are distinguished not by their own nature, but by a certain empty opinion and custom of men. Therefore, they think that laws and the appearance of equity were invented for this purpose: to restrain the dissensions and tumults of those born into a condition of obedience. As for themselves, who are situated in the highest fortune, they say that all law should be measured by their own will, and their will by their own utility. It is not surprising that this opinion, which is clearly absurd and contrary to nature, has gained some authority for itself, since the arts of flatterers, to which all power is susceptible, have contributed to this common disease of the human race, whereby we pursue not only vices, but also the justifications for those vices.
