Ald. 3/3
We are publishing the Satires of Juvenal and A. Persius in this miniature format so that they may be held in the hands, studied, and read by everyone more conveniently. We do so at a time when all vice stands on a steeper precipice than it did when these works were first composed, for I do not doubt that life recognizes its own habits and reads its own character. We send these to you, most dear Scipio, so that they may become familiar to you again through their brevity, just as they were once when you lived in Rome as a young man, at which time you held them in your memory no less than your own fingers and nails. FAREWELL.
Centered below the text is a faint woodcut of the Aldine printer's mark: a vertical anchor with a dolphin entwined around its shaft, representing the motto "Make haste slowly."
