Although the writings previously published in the name of Monseigneur the Prince of Condé, and of all the Princes, Lords, Gentlemen, and others in his retinue, show clearly enough the equity of the cause that has armed them—both for the service of the King and the preservation of his greatness, and for the maintenance of his Edicts concerning the holy liberty and peace of conscience of the Eglises reformees Reformed Churches/Protestant Churches that exist in this Kingdom—nevertheless, since the enemies of the honor of God and of the public peace are constantly putting forth new slanders, by which they intend to oppress the innocence of the said Lord Prince and his associates, it is quite reasonable that if the wicked do not tire of attacking equity and justice, the good should not tire of defending them.

Now, because on the twenty-seventh day of July last
