Remonstrance of the Prince of Condé

made following the advice of the Estates the representative assembly of the realm (which ought to have place during the minority of the said Lord), his liberty, that of the Queen, and the public good and rest: or their enemies, who, taking up arms without the authority of the King, have infringed his edicts, sacked his cities, murdered his subjects, and put forward ordinances entirely contrary to those of the King, and notably to the Edict of January, made so solemnly, as we have said, received with one same consent throughout this Kingdom, and even greatly praised by foreigners.

If, therefore, one wishes to look with an upright eye at all parts of this cause, one will find that the said Lord Prince and associates have been falsely declared rebels by those who are truly such; have been declared seditious by those who, since the death of the late King Henry, have caused all the troubles that have occurred in this Kingdom; and have been declared criminals of leze Maiesté high treason/lese-majesty by those who oppress the Majesty of the King, abolish his ordinances, and abuse his name and authority to acquire their own greatness at the price of his ruin.
