fail in the duty he has toward the King, nor forget the position he holds in this Kingdom.
Therefore, the said Lord Prince and his entire company protest before the Majesty of God and that of the King, and before all the peoples and nations to whom the knowledge of this fact has reached and may reach, that they feel and recognize themselves as very humble and very obedient subjects and servants of the King, their sovereign Lord and Prince. And that their arms are not addressed and will never be addressed against his Majesty, but against his enemies. Whom they hold for rebels, seditious, and criminals of divine and human lèse-majesté high treason: because they have subverted the laws and customs of this Kingdom, have infringed the Edicts of the King, and violated the authority of the Estates, by intruding themselves into the council of his Majesty (from which they are excluded by the advice of the said Estates) and driving away the faithful and legitimate counselors of the King. Furthermore, because they have seized his person, forcing his liberty, abusing his name to color their ambition and insatiable cruelty: they have made and make ordinarily conspiracies, leagues, and practices as much to maintain their usurpation as to ruin the greater part of the faithful servants of the King: And notably to banish from France the pure preaching of the Gospel, to sack and exterminate those who make profession of it.
