for masculines, and La for feminines in the singular: the plural of both, whether masculine or feminine, is Les. We borrow these articles from the pronouns Ille, Illa, Illi. Others, de, du, des, a, au, aux, we borrow from prepositions.
As far as aux pertains, if it is joined to the pronoun quels, the x is changed into s, and thus it is joined to it as if it were a single word: as ausquels.
