I confess, my Peter, that so much labor was taken away from me in preparing these matters that almost nothing remained. Otherwise, the conception or the organization of this subject could have demanded from a talent not of the lowest sort, nor entirely unlearned, some amount of both time and study. But if it were demanded that the subject be written elegantly, not just truthfully, that indeed could not have been performed by me, with any amount of time or study. Now, however, when these cares were removed—in which so much sweat would have had to be exhausted—and only this remained, that the things heard should be written down simply, there was no difficulty at all. But for the accomplishment of this "no difficulty," my other duties left me almost less than no time.
