The Fifty Sayings

The days of man are three: yesterday, its time has passed; today, he is ill and is not; and tomorrow is hidden, and no one understands it.

Saying Six

We learned wisdom so that we might conduct ourselves through it over the lowly, and not to be like the disqualified.

Saying Seven

A man's drinking and eating clarify the eyes of his intellect.

Saying Eight

If you seek your sufficiency, a little will suffice for you; and if you seek more than your sufficiency, the whole world will not suffice for you.

Saying Nine

Do not be among those who, at the time of their distress, cease from their wickedness; in their illnesses, they repent of their sins; and in the time of their poverty, they humble their pride.

Saying Ten

Anyone who comes into the service of the King without faithfulness brings his soul into danger.

Saying Eleven

He who teaches his children wisdom in their youth will find their goodness in their maturity; for in the time of harvest, if he has chosen well at the beginning of the year, his labor will increase in its end.
