Ro. 16.c A
...that I may attain to Christ sitting at the right hand of God: through faith, life, virtue, and purity, I will wash that footprint which Jesus Christ washed. And you will have walked that place: God will give to you that you may be made not only an heir of God, but a co-heir of Christ.
¶ From the desert, etc. And from the Antilibanus, etc. He did not say Libanus, but Antilibanus, which he receives from God by being cut off. But Antilibanus is so called as if it were "before Libanus." If, therefore, you see the prior people, that is, Israel according to the flesh, who were the true olive tree, he understands him to have been the true Libanus. But because for his unbelief the kingdom is taken away from him and given to the nation producing its fruits, this nation is Antilibanus, that is, the Church gathered from the nations through Jesus Christ.
¶ As I was with Moses, etc. Augustine. And through the testimony and other things, Moses is proven to be a servant of God and pleasing to God, and that in him was fulfilled that vengeance, that he did not enter the land of promise. And thus he understands God to judge his good servants sometimes corporeally or temporally, and yet them among useful and honest vessels...

from him: it was after the end of the mourning of Moses. The former seems more probable, as will appear more later. 1a Moses my servant is dead. And in this, the error of those is evident who said that Moses was damned, because his sin is read of in the waters of contradiction, as it is held in Numbers 20, and his penance is not read of. To which I say: because the Lord here calls Moses his servant even after his death, which is said of no damned person. Nor is what is objected valid, because the penance of Moses is held at least from the letter, in this: that he accepted the sentence of death imposed on him by God before the entry into the land of promise as a punishment for his sin. Which is evident from this: because at the word of the Lord, he ascended the mountain of Abarim voluntarily, and was about to die there. And in this, that the Lord, as if accepting his obedience, buried him, as it is held in the last chapter of Deuteronomy.
¶ Arise and cross this Jordan. That is, prepare yourself and your people to cross: because they did not cross immediately, but after some days, as will appear more below.
¶ With you: you and all the people with you. Because the care of the people was imposed on him by God, as it is held in Deuteronomy 31.
¶ Into the land, etc. Because with God as the actor, they entered the land and obtained it.
¶ Every place. And this is said by some Hebrew doctors: that not only was the land of Judea promised to them, but also the whole habitable earth. Which they say was fulfilled in the time of Solomon, to whom all the kings of the earth were tributary. And thus they explain what is said in 2 Kings, chapter 10: "All the earth desired to see the face of Solomon, and each brought him gifts, that is, tributes," as they explain. But it is expected to be more perfectly fulfilled in the King Messiah, whom they expect as the future king over the whole world. But the falsity of both statements appears from what follows:
¶ From the desert and Libanus, etc. Where the borders of the land promised to the children of Israel are expressed.
¶ No one will be able. After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel sinned, and then their adversaries prevailed against them, as it is held in the Book of Judges. Others have it otherwise, but wrongly.
¶ As I was with Moses in divine revelations and miraculous works.
¶ So I will be with you. And this is sufficiently evident from the course of the book in the following.
¶ I will not dismiss nor abandon you. A multiplication of words having the same meaning, brought in for the greater assertion of the statement.
¶ Be comforted and be strong. Here the second mandate is placed about dividing the land, to which divine consolation is submitted, when it says:
¶ Be comforted and be strong. For Joshua was terrified, how the most holy man, disturbed by malice, had sinned in the waters of contradiction, on account of which he had been deprived of the entry into the land of promise. And therefore he deservedly feared lest something similar happen to him, and therefore he was comforted and assured of the acquisition and division of the land. Therefore he adds:
¶ You, however, will divide by lot, etc.
¶ For which I swore, etc. Regarding which oath, it is held in Genesis 22: "By myself I have sworn, says the Lord," etc.
¶ Be comforted, therefore, and be strong. Greatly, so that you keep and do all the Law, etc. Here the third commandment is placed about keeping the Law. And the letter is clear up to there.
Moral sense
¶ Moses my servant is dead. Arise and cross this Jordan. Christ was baptized by John in the Jordan, and thus he crossed part of the Jordan, because it is said in Matthew 3: "Jesus immediately ascends from the water." And thus, by synecdoche, he is said to have crossed the Jordan because, by the touch of his most holy flesh, he gave regenerating power to the waters.
¶ With you and all the people with you. For no one enters the people of Christ unless he crosses through...
