After the death of Henry the Great, everyone thought of their own affairs: the Queen of establishing her authority, and the principal Ministers of State of maintaining theirs by supporting hers, as it was easier to authorize by the absence of the first Prince of the blood, the imbecility original: imbecillité; meaning here lack of strength or capacity of the second, and the poor intelligence original: intelligence; meaning here understanding or rapport of the third with the other great men, who sought to rise from the debasement to which the previous reign had subjected them. Amidst all this, hatreds were exercised, and the most skillful used the passions of others to ruin the authority of those who were ruining their own.
