DUKE OF ROHAN.
Marshal of La Châtre, who was its Lieutenant General. Upon his return from this expedition, he found that they were pressuring the Duke of Sully, his father-in-law. And after they had taken the Bastille from him to dispose of the treasures within, and the charge of the finances to rob France with complete freedom, they resolved to destroy him entirely. But because, through ordinary channels, they could find nothing against his administration in any of his charges, the Marshal of Bouillon, who had rallied the Prince of Condé and the Count of Soissons to his side, projected this plan: to propose a general assembly of those of the Religion the Huguenots, which was granted in the month of May 1611, in which he would have them abandon the Duke of Sully, so that without apprehension they could proceed against him. And furthermore, he promised himself, through his authority and industry, to dispose of the said assembly, and of all the affairs of those of the Religion, so that he would make himself considerable. To achieve this design, he showed great zeal for those of the Religion, proposed to improve their affairs, and communicated about it privately
