Chapter 9

The more strange human spirits appear or stand before us, the more often they should be tested and confirmed. As mentioned, these voices correspond to the vegetable and animal realms. In one word, they are not found as if they are merely in the universe, but because they are the universe. The philosophers say: The Stone is all things original: "Lapis est omnis res". Things that are vegetable are born from the mineral realm. Thus the universal specific seed is also found there.

Wine is nothing else but that which has the power of all herbs and roots within itself. This can be seen in drunken people, how manifoldly they are transformed. It is a universal simple original: "simplex universum". It is like the fathers, like wine, for it is the noblest vegetable and a blood of the earth. Christ, the eternal wisdom, also compares His holy blood to this. Wine gladdens the human heart, as the Psalms say, just as bread strengthens the human heart. Woe, however, to those who drink it to excess. Therefore Saint Paul says: Do not be full of wine, which brings unchastity, but be full of the Holy Spirit.
