are held as one body. After such a conjunction,
the earth becomes pregnant by the influence of the
superior Heaven, and then a generation occurs according
to the influence, which generation, after
conception, flowing through the Elements, is
reduced into an ample maturity. That which is
therefore comprised and counted among the
supernatural things, so too the supernatural
substance accomplishes its operation in the Natural.
There is also counted among the
Supernatural things every kind of magie magic and
Cabale Kabbalah and what depends on them, which come from
the knowledge of the true light, not at all
those which come from superstitions, nor those
which are done through conjurations as
those conjurers of Devils are accustomed to do.
But I mean such magic as that of the
Wise Men of the East, who judged by Divine
inspiration and by true, precious science;
also such as the ancients before us,
and which was in use among the Egyptians and the
Arabs before writing was found, who
noted and observed their affairs by
signs and characters and similar things to
retain them. Just as the blessings
which Jesus Christ used are not forbidden
to be used, as the Scripture tells me, and He
took the children and, placing his hands on them, He
blessed them. But that which is against God and his
word must not by right reason be permitted,
but on the contrary rejected, for these things are not
Divine but Diabolical. Thus, such things as are not
contrary to God nor his holy word, all these super-
-natural things belong to magic, which does not
offend the soul. And touching the visions
and other things that have been often seen in
holy works, they shall also be counted among
non-natural things, for everything that the person
speculates upon that can be understood by the surrounding
Spirit original: "Demon," here meaning a guiding spirit or intellect is Supernatural, and conversely, all
that man can handle and understand
is natural.
Thirdly, there is comprised in medicine,
in the third part of natural things,
each in its strength and virtue, which medicine
of each thing must be extracted from a
natural, visible, and palpable body, and reduced into a
better spiritual Supernatural virtue, so
that the spirit which in the beginning was infused
into the body to live is released, so that in operating
it can penetrate like a fire and substance
