They call the Sulphur Sulfur, the active masculine principle by innumerable names when it becomes a mercurial substance. This substance is called the element of the earth of gold, its soul, or the first element, or the water of the intermediate substance animated by the Sole Sun or Gold. It is called:
Natural Sulfur, sublimated quicksilver, Argentum vivum Quicksilver/Mercury sublimated and exuberant with its own sulfur, the Draco omnia et suam caudam devorans Dragon devouring all things and its own tail, Sal Alkali Alkali Salt extracted from its earth, Sal armoniacum Sal Ammoniac, and Philosophice urine Philosophical Urine. For it physically dissolves metals. Or rather, the soul of these metals is what the philosophers of metals are accustomed to call Water or Urine, white foliated earth, or purified earth.
It is also called transforming and deadly Poison, a purified body, exalted gold, or dry water adhering to the inhabitants of the earth. He calls it by many other names, as will be clear from what is to be said.
He calls it the earth of the Sun despoiled of its own Mercurio Mercury or its own soul. It is called dead earth, a dead body, the second of salt, or the Sol eclipsatus Eclipsed Sun. If, however, it is the earth of silver, it is called the Luna ecclipsata Eclipsed Moon.
The Leo rubeus Red Lion is the sulfur made pure from the earth of gold and its soul, or a composite of the earth of gold and the mercury of the Sun animated by the water of the intermediate substance. However, the Leo viridis Green Lion is the said water animated by the Sun; he calls it the Green Lion because
it is: an immature stone in its herbal state, not yet cooked or fixed with its Sulfur. Just as immature fruits and herbs are usually green. Therefore, the Green Lion is twofold because the Red Lion, or Sulfur, nourishes and increases the Stone. He also calls the soul of gold itself the Green Lion.
Aqua sicca Dry water, water that does not wet the hands, and aqua manens remaining water signify the same thing. This is the metallic substance itself rightly prepared and sublimated. Sometimes, however, by the name of water that does not wet the hands, is understood the mercurial water of the intermediate substance, or even that same water animated by the Sun, or the double mercurial substance. It is also called the soul of the Sun: aqua permanens permanent water.
Oleum incombustibile Incombustible oil is ordinarily taken either for the oil of a perfect metal or for philosophical sulfur dissolved in oil or a double mercurial substance. Indeed, the twin mercury itself, or the double mercurial substance itself, is usually called incombustible oil.
The stone, cooked and fixed, which only requires the final inceratione softening with oil or wax, is called Magnesia a term for the crude material of the Stone, dead body, or the light body.
