45. In the way that you saw that a stone was cut from the mountain, not by hand, and it shattered the iron, metal, earthenware, silver, and gold, the great God made known to the king what is to be after this, and the dream is true, and its declaration is faithful.
EXPOSITION.
Verse 37. YOU, O king, the King of kings, God of heaven, gave you the kingdom, treasury, power, and glory.
Or according to another version, He calls Nebuchadnezzar himself King of kings (for having many under his obedience), the God of heaven gave you together with the kingdom and empire, חסנא תוקפא יקרא Hisna, Tokfa, Iekara, in which three epithets are included the three necessary things required in war: namely, Treasuries, Forces, and military Prudence. Treasuries, because as Dionysius of Halicarnassus says (book 6), wars for the most part are sustained by the abundance of money; and Flamininus mocked Philopoemen, general of the Achaeans, and his well-armed army, saying it was a body with hands and feet, but that it lacked a belly, which was money. Forces, and courage in the soldiers, to tolerate the infinite labors of war, suffering with patience the inclement colds and heats, and attacking the opposing hosts without fearing death.
