Not long thereafter he perished in a mine, and one could find nothing from anyone regarding his art. Because I saw this truth with this miner myself, I set out on the path in the year 1483, and traveled here and there; wherever I heard of an artist, I had the diligence to come to him, and I spent a year and a half on this wandering. I learned all kinds of arts from alchemy the study of transmutation, which did not yield much, yet I saw the truth in a few particulars and spent 200 florins, and thought nonetheless not to desist.
I thought and was diligent that I might raise expenses among my friends, and took my journey with a foreign man to Labach Ljubljana, from thence to Milan, and came into a monastery, wherein I served and attended his lectures for nearly a year. Afterwards I traveled everywhere in Italy and came to an Italian merchant and a Jew who could speak German. These made the
