It forbids us from following its own laws,
So that we may discern His Light,

The Sun of Justice, the fountain of blessings, the flower of God,
Born of God, the Sower of the World,
The mortality of our life, and the death of death;
He is the Master of virtue,
And being God for us, and a man on our behalf,
He puts us on Takes on human nature. and strips Himself [of His glory],
Joining eternal dealings between humans and God,
And between one another.
Therefore, when He has flashed His radiance from Heaven
Into our innermost hearts,
He wipes away the sickly decay of the sluggish body,
And renews the disposition of the mind;
He drains away all that gave pleasure before,
Replacing it with chaste delight,
And by the Lord’s right, He claims all
Our hearts, our mouths, and our time;
He wishes Himself to be thought of, understood, believed, and read;
He wants Himself to be feared and loved.
To one who is free for Him, or studying and devoted,
Placing all things in Him—
I pray you, do not think him idle or perverse,
Nor accuse him of being impious.
