Silence After the Clamors

and defense,
and I myself have nothing
to hope from them other than the good will
which they, as honest, sincere
persons, willingly offer to all pious,
sincere people, I have nevertheless not
been able to refrain from defending
the truth in this matter, so that the same
would not be more and more violently
oppressed by the envy and jealousy
of the inexperienced than it would be
freed by the sincerity of
sensible, good-hearted people. As there is
no doubt that there are many of these
who are like that shoemaker,
who could neither read nor write,
and who helped to condemn Aristides an Athenian statesman noted for his justice, who
had served the fatherland to the
highest degree, along with others,
solely for that reason.
