This image shows the front cover of a sixteenth-century blind-tooled leather binding. The design is composed of concentric rectangular borders created with decorative roll stamps. The outermost roll features a series of allegorical figures representing the Virtues, each set within an arched frame and identified by a Latin label. Inside this is a narrower border with a foliate scroll pattern. The central panel is framed by another decorative roll and contains a large, vertically oriented oval medallion with a stylized four-petaled floral or foliate motif. Traces of metal clasp attachments are visible on the right edge.
The following Latin terms are found as labels for the figures in the decorative roll-stamped borders:
CHARITY
PRUDENCE
JUSTICE
FAITH
HOPE
