But what abuses and deceits daily occur in this art at the present time is sufficiently evident. For one finds very many runaway good-for-nothings, quacks, and bath-keepers, who constantly run from one city to another with their adulterated, stinking theriacs medicinal treacle/antidotes and cursed ointments, and not only empty the purses and chests of the common mob, but also take their life and limb, especially when they undertake to cut and heal harelips, hernias, stones, and growths. This is rightly called experimenta per mortes agere to conduct experiments through deaths.
