cian-Philosopher might require regarding the first origin or mode of generation of this mineral, as well as its nature, quality, powers, and use, which are most necessary to know and understand. I have striven solely to teach, explain, and hand these down clearly, transparently, openly, and methodically for no other end than to be of some service to those who, with a singular study or ardor of mind, are drawn to the most delightful contemplation of natural things, and especially to the knowledge of minerals or metals and the diligent investigation of their nature. Furthermore, I hope to inflame and excite other Philosophers and Physicians, however many there may be, preeminent in Erudition, Virtue, and Authority throughout Europe, toward a further, more precise, and more exquisite investigation and scrutiny of this metal of such wonderful Nature. I hope to incite them to add, to perfect with greater refinement and care, and to explain more clearly those remaining things which were either entirely omitted and passed over by us, or were set forth with less refined judgment, or were spoken of in a less suitable and appropriate manner, through the publication of this Writing.
