The volume is bound in vellum vellum: a high-quality, durable parchment made from animal skin and decorated with intricate gold tooling gold tooling: a decorative process where heated metal stamps are used to press gold leaf into the surface of the binding. The layout features multiple rectangular borders. At the four corners of the inner frame are stamped fleur-de-lis symbols fleur-de-lis: a stylized lily motif frequently used in heraldry to signify light, life, or royalty.
The centerpiece of the cover is a large heraldic coat of arms. It includes a shield with ornate mantling original: "mantling" refers to the decorative cloth-like flourishes surrounding a shield and a crest at the top. Such displays were intended to immediately communicate the lineage, status, and authority of the book's possessor.
