plague, and the small flock of the pious
hiding among the impious crowd of men
might be a participant in the same punishment;
for the honor of God and my Fatherland,
and for the consolation of the pious inhabitants,
it seemed advisable to me to gladly bring to light
the talent entrusted to me by God, by whose
aid many future calamities—namely, the
scarcity of food, war, and plague—could be
prevented. This, however, by which I have
proposed to serve my Fatherland, consists
principally in the manifestation and revelation
of the greatest treasures lying hidden in
Germany, which the carelessness of men has
neglected to recognize, seek, and unearth:
I have endeavored to faithfully manifest in
the present treatise how these may be sought
for the benefit of the Fatherland and properly
arranged; and I have decided to reveal the
treasures of Noble Germany, with which, above
other regions of Europe, it has been most
abundantly enriched, and yet—specifically with
wine, grain, wood, minerals, and metals—it has
hitherto not used and enjoyed them in the way
