I am led, Auditors, without difficult effort, to believe that you all will go along with me in the same opinion, with hands and feet, that in order to acquire a solid knowledge of any thing, it is most necessary that first of all we demonstrate whether the matter truly exists as it is assumed and as we imagine it to be? For would he not waste both his oil and his labor, who would induce his mind to spend his life more occupied in investigating the causes of some Chimera, that is, of a thing far removed from any foundation of truth?
