that the soul which Nature had previously enclosed in it (because it had been dissolved and separated through the decay) then acts upon the growth of the stalk or stem of the wheat. It rises upward and becomes a wheat ear again, and has become a hundred times better and more powerful in its juicy essence and form. For if the little grain had not decayed in the earth, the soul which lay hidden in it could not have grown to greater power and succulence. Note here in what I tell you three origins and different things in the new little grain. Firstly, it is the grain that decayed in the earth; secondly, the stalk that grows out of the earth; thirdly, the ear that comes forth from the grain and stalk; and after these three, the fourth, namely, the new grain.
Know that these four things have their different names, yet the thing itself is only one, namely, the little tree of the grain, which came from a single little grain. These four things were previously hidden in the wheat grain, which were driven forth by a single thing, namely, by the single work of Nature, in a fertile earth, through a warm air, and the ray of the sun, as I have said before. But I pray you to look well with the eyes of the understanding at this small growth or little tree of the wheat grain
