I pray, however, that I do not require a fortress guarded by arms against the hostile attacks of various authors original: "AA. VV." stands for "Autores Varii"; for it would be dishonest to impose that kind of protection upon the shoulders of those who, dedicated to more serious occupations, care for more weighty matters. Yet, I neither challenge anyone nor do I beg mercy from anyone. Let it suffice for me to have unfurled my standard in your sight, so that I may freely and with greater courage defend the truth of the matter, which is supported by experiments and reasons, so that I may more energetically persist, and if I am able, bring others to my opinion. For from you, as fair supporters, I hope for all things prosperous. May God, the thrice Best and Greatest, grant this.
