Since we can in no way do without water for human maintenance, necessity, pleasure, and other diverse uses. However, this is initially obtained most sparingly where the springs have their free, public flows from the earth. Where such flowing springs do not exist, one must seek sources and veins beneath the soil. In such a way that one lies down flat upon the earth at the place where one wishes to seek water before sunrise, holding the face toward the earth, keeping the chin stiff and steady, and keeping it no higher from the surface of the earth than is necessary. Where it is then noticed that a vapor or mist rises from the earth and swirls together, there you may dig securely, for such a thing is not seen in a dry place.
