especially to raise water in all kinds of manners, whereby the mill-work is advanced for the benefit of man and daily maintenance, to grind flour, for hammer and smithy-work, paper mills, board and saw mills, all of which serves for the particular utility of men. Hence the dear ancients and philosophers thought upon these things, to lead aqueducts and water pipes. And although there are many countless ways by which one should seek and discover water, I will leave it at that for the sake of brevity. Only this I must still mention: since Vitruvius Vitruvio holds these waters, which have their source toward Septentrione the north or midnight, to be the best in taste and the healthiest due to their coldness, yet others are considered healthy that spring up and have their outflow toward the rising of the sun and midday.
