The central feature is a large cylindrical drum or wheel mounted on a sturdy square wooden frame partially submerged in a waterway. The wheel is labeled with the letter "A" on its upper outer rim and the letter "M" on its side face. A man, dressed in a doublet and breeches, stands knee-deep in the water and turns a crank handle attached to the axle of the machine.
Leading away from the top of the wheel is a rectangular wooden trough or flume, labeled with the letter "G", which carries water upwards and through a gap in a wooden fence or weir in the middle ground. To the right of the machine, a second man is seated on a rocky bank, observing the work. The background shows rolling hills and a simple horizon line under a clear sky.
A. The metal cover in which the wheel moves.
G. The pipe or pump through which the water is driven upwards.
I. The channel into which the water is discharged.
M. The wheel, fitted with four boards, which acts upon the water.
