An alchemical emblem featuring a woodcut. At the center is an owl wearing large spectacles, perched on a mound of earth. Behind the owl's head, two flaming torches are crossed. To the left and right of the owl stand tall, ornate candlesticks, each holding a single burning candle with a radiant halo. The entire illustration is enclosed within a thick black rectangular frame.
What use are TORCHES, LIGHT, and SPECTACLES,
Since everyone, according to their own will,
Searches anxiously in CHEMISTRY,
So that the HEART in their body pounds!
They search indeed far and wide,
Yet they find NOTHING at all,
And they rely upon every whim,
Because they only do as they please,
Thus they will never encounter
The TRUTH, which can bring joy,
Try it, and read this with UNDERSTANDING,
And do not grope blindly along the WALL,
Use TORCHES, LIGHT, and SPECTACLES correctly,
Then GOD will fulfill your wish.
Handwritten Latin inscription in a later hand: Since the entire composition is not valid without the unctuous, viscous humidity, according to Arnoldus Arnold of Villa Nova and the Sages.
