(1) Since it differs in its own appearance from the Clinopodium, and because its flowers are not whorled in the manner of the Clinopodium, but are sparser along the stem and emerge from the axils of the leaves, and finally because the lower lip of these same flowers is sub-round and entire, or at the very least emarginated, I deemed it fitting to restore it to the ancient name.

(4) With us, this plant is very late-blooming, and its seeds do not begin to burst from the earth and vegetate until the end of June. It is an annual, but most beautiful, and bears countless, very large, pale-colored berries, covered by a huge pentagonal casing that is first green, then turns yellowish.
