Büchner, Andreas Elias · 1755

An elaborate ornamental woodcut headpiece. Two winged figures (putti) are depicted: the one on the left points toward a large map or celestial chart, while the one on the right rests a hand on a terrestrial globe. The scene is surrounded by decorative scrolling acanthus leaves, floral motifs, and scientific instruments including a compass and a ruler.
An ornate woodcut initial letter 'T' set within a decorative cartouche. The frame is topped with a circular medallion containing a profile portrait of a man, possibly the author or a patron.
Although I fear greatly that many of you will judge this little work, whatever it may be, as trivial and not sufficiently timely, and that you will see in this judgment reasonable grounds for yourselves as you read the index of the Library printed in type, which is in no part outstanding for the abundance of its books nor for their weight and value, I hope nevertheless that not all of you will disapprove of my present undertaking if you come to know what purpose I had in embarking upon this labor.
