author would have indeed wished to wait another 2 to 3 years with the printing to publish something more satisfying; however, the stormy changes of time in Europe dictate that an enterprise calculated for times of peace and numerous visits by foreigners to our Switzerland should not be further postponed, now that a state of rest has entered, at least for the moment, and the influx of travelers in need of advice, who had been held back for a long time, is just now beginning to flow most abundantly. We may also flatter ourselves that we are presenting enough that is useful and pleasant so that we might not be accused of an immature execution of a matured plan. The foundation of this work was laid through repeated travels and personal observation. Subsequently, newly appeared writings, such as those by König and the excellent Voyage pittoresque de l'Oberland Picturesque Journey through the Oberland by Stapfer, provided a fine increase to the gathered material. Finally, abundant and highly welcome communications reached us from various sides and from such esteemed hands that we could promise ourselves no small amount of participation from these alone.
