474.) Lucae Holstenii Notae & Castigationes postumae in Stephani Byzantii 'Εθνικὰ, quae vulgo περὶ πόλεων inscribunt: post longam doctorum exspectationem editae a Theodoro Ryckio. Qui Scymni Chii Fragmenta hactenus non edita: Item Dissertationem de primis Italiae colonis, & Aeneae adventu: Et alia nonnulla addidit. Lugd. Batavorum, apud Jac. Hackium 1684. f. pagg. 497. Posthumous notes and castigations of Lucas Holstenius on the 'Ethnika' of Stephanus of Byzantium, which are commonly inscribed 'On Cities': published after a long expectation of the learned by Theodorus Ryckius. Who added the hitherto unpublished fragments of Scymnus of Chios: Also a dissertation on the first colonists of Italy and the arrival of Aeneas: and added several other things. Leiden, at Jac. Hackius, 1684. fol. pp. 497. without the register.
It is a pity that Holstenius could not put the finishing touch on his notes on Stephanus. It may well not have been his intention that they should come into print, for they are still far removed from their perfection. No Italian scholar wanted to undertake the publication so as not to approach too closely the high esteem in which Holstenius was held everywhere. Meanwhile, one owes many thanks to Theodorus Ryckius, who brought them into the light, and to Cardinal Francisco Barbarino, who provided him with Holstenius's Adversaria notes/rough drafts, that they did not want to rob the learned republic of his work. For one can also sufficiently gather from this that Holstenius must with all right be counted among the chief scholars. The pieces attached to these notes are worthy of all honor, namely Francisci Guieti Notae in Stephanum de Urbibus, Xylandrianae editionis marginibus ab eo adscriptae. Scymni Chii Fragmenta Francis Guietus's notes on Stephanus on Cities, added by him to the margins of the Xylander edition. Fragments of Scymnus of Chios περιηγήσεως of the periegesis/travelogue hactenus non edita, cum Versione Latina Lucae Holstenii. Lucae Holstenii Commentariolus in veterem Picturam Nymphaeum referentem. Ejusdem Dissertatio de Pila Staffilari. De Milliario aureo error popularis, quem omnes fere Antiquarii errant, ab eodem explosus. Ejusdem laus Boreae. Theodori Ryckii Dissertatio de Primis Italiae Colonis, & Aeneae adventu. Accedit ejusdem Oratio de Gigantibus. hitherto unpublished, with a Latin version by Lucas Holstenius. Lucas Holstenius's small commentary on an ancient painting depicting a Nymphaeum. A dissertation of the same on the 'Pila Staffilari'. A popular error regarding the Golden Milestone, which almost all antiquarians err in, exploded by the same. The same's praise of Boreas. Theodorus Ryckius's dissertation on the first colonists of Italy and the arrival of Aeneas. Added is the same's oration on Giants. And an extensive register of the scribes who are praised, corrected, and explained, or refuted in Holstenius's notes. See the Acta Eruditorum regarding this and the previous book.
