and I composed and wrote it within a two-month period, under the harshness of a most severe winter, in which, unless the pen was brought to the breath of my mouth, no ink could have been dripped on account of the frost. Posterity will judge what this work will be like. I know that many will criticize that haste. Let it be permitted by me, for I do not strive for estimation; I accelerated it with the intention of helping, not for the sake of glory. I have certainly tried to treat this, whatever it is, as a discipline. For whoever wishes to compose a settlement among men of adverse opinion first posits, asserts, and proves the truth; in the second place, he refutes the false; thirdly, he explains if there is anything common to both parties; fourthly, he shows by what reason the adverse parts might agree by substituting truths in place of the false. Therefore, in the first book, I have posited, asserted, and confirmed what should properly be said and held as true (for truth is manifold), that is, what is held in the dogmas of the religion of holy Jesus Christ, not by authority (as Augustinus Eugubinus Agostino Steuco, Iustinus Justin Martyr, Theodoretus Theodoret of Cyrus, and almost everyone before me did), but by reason and demonstration. I have especially wished to persuade and demonstrate with the most powerful arguments in that book the holy Trinitas Trinity, the creation of the world from nothing, the resurrectio resurrection, and the immortality of souls, since certain philosophers disprove these, while Christians believe them more than they understand them by reason, and this is the strongest cause of the impiety arising everywhere.
