And so that they do not believe I am concealing anything, I have refuted the opinions they bring against Jesus Christ and his gospel, and those things which seemed to oppose us mostly fight against their own obstinate perfidy. One thing remained, and it was the more terrible because it was more familiar and more similar to the truth: the opinion of the Cenevangelistarum Empty-gospellers / false evangelists. I compared it with the truth, as far as my meager ability allowed, using reasons also deduced from a common principle, with which I had decided to put a catastrophe to the work, so that it would not appear that I had passed over or concealed anything that opposed the truth handed down in the first book according to the primary principles. But an unexpected obstacle from the faculty of theologians opposed this endeavor, which deserved praise even if only for the vow and the will. It did not stand so much in the way of the work already completed as it delayed my journey, by which it could be brought to light and judged by the suffrages of the church. For I had immediately decided, if I should learn that it would be approved by the primates of the church, to translate and explain it into the very languages of the peoples against whom I write, even at the risk of my life. This, however, cannot be done by me unless the book is publicly published and examined by the censorship of the church. Therefore, before it was published, I had decided to offer it to the school of the Parisian theologians. Occupied in that expectation for six whole months in vain, I finally published the first book at my own expense for the sake of friends, and also for the sake of passing the time and for the sake of the printer.
