And so I was not only excluded but deprived of the work, which he himself claimed as his own some years later; such is the equity and such is the faith of that sacrosanct Senate. Thus, first by Vinetus, and second by Bisuinetus, I was excluded from the order of the Catoleucorum Platyzoniorum a satirical term Postel uses for the scholastic order, possibly meaning "wide-girdled" or "broad-belted" ones, and it is its singular ornament. This, indeed, is the cause of his malevolence toward me: when we were once dining together at a friend's house, the conversation fell, as it usually does, on sacred matters, and among other things, it was debated about the word "to enjoy." I said, however, that such a thorny kind of disputation in the schools is not to be approved in every respect, for more things are called into doubt there, which the auditor carries away undiscussed. On the contrary, he said that no one in the whole world is learned unless he has been long and diligently versed in the scholastic doctors. And what I could not bear was that he would place Ambrosius Ambrose, Hilarius Hilary, Hieronymus Jerome, and Augustinus Augustine among the scholastics for the sake of defending impudence, since I had never read that they were called by the name of scholastics by the ancients, and I knew them to be most alien to tortuous sophisms. He flew into a rage, and clamoring with shouting, he sought victory in the manner familiar to the unlearned. I said that this is the way of Sophistarum sophists: that they want everything to be permitted to them, and that they hold clamor in place of reason, and authority in place of judgment. He alone heard from me what he deserved, but when the occasion offered itself, he reported this rebuke, which he had heard because of his own great merit, to the entire order which I have always honored as I ought and which has most learned men. Such is the charity and such is the piety of a man who is also a professor of evangelical councils. Absent and innocent, I was judged unworthy of the vote of men in that meeting.
