does not square with the reasoning of Luther, Oecolampadius, Bucer, and all the rest. For there is no one who does not place himself in the position of a leader among the Ceneuangelistae Empty-gospellers. We have been led into error by the apostles, the councils, the holy doctors, and the consensus of the world; a single faction of Empty-gospellers has now restored the truth that had been buried since the times of Christ to the world. No one before them truly understood the sacred things. Indeed, this is not common only to Muhammad and the factious people of our own time, but every single plague of heretics that has ever existed has taken this upon themselves. For they claim that the truth had remained hidden until their own times, and that it ought to be believed and understood against the common consensus.
Thus taught Arius, thus Pelagius, Donatus, Mani, Nestorius, and those of the Euchites, Monothelites, Patripassians, Encratites, and all the rest. Such was their cunning in teaching that they boasted that the truth of interpretation resided with them alone, and that all others were in error. Each one began to cloak himself in the spirit of God, the familiarity of angels, and revelations. From such principles, under the pretext of truth and by frequent mention, falsehood has crept in, and creeps in daily, to the world. Satan transforms himself into an angel of light. Thus the unwary are imposed upon, thus the unskilled are captured, and thus the factious conceive excuses for doing harm and for rising up. And meanwhile, our own people are not ashamed, under the sacred name of Jesus Christ, to arrive at such arrogance and temerity that, making a prejudice in their own favor, they dare to set themselves before all other mortals, despising the judgment of God, to whom his own servant stands or falls. They do not see how impudently they snatch judgment away from God, the searcher of hearts, and dare to call his church the congregation of Satan. But such is the custom of factions; otherwise, unless all ancient traditions were exploded, it would not be permitted to draw the unskilled into their own opinion.
