This is that mobile spirit, by whose ministry things are done and have been done in specters and motions entirely impossible for God, which a shallow intelligence falsely attributes to the divinity. For that reason, the holy spirit is said of God to be both capable of being saddened, and groaning, and descending, and sent, and munificent, and a fosterer, and by other names: in which themselves motion is necessarily attributed and exists, which is necessarily denied in God. Jesus had things to say to His own, but only to those capable of hearing. In this general spirit, constant in past and present, the angelic nature saw the whole history of the world before the counting intellect was enclosed in this cage of the heavens. And thus He was the pedagogue of the angels. And therefore, if the devil had wanted to repent with his own, for the love of nature and of the school, He died for him in intention no differently than He died for us. For that reason, Jesus wanted to be crucified between two thieves of divine glory, with one remaining in obstinacy. For thus He reconciled all things, whether those in heaven or those on earth. And this was an accidental office, born from sin. Indeed, by mental pain, that holy spirit was crucified for both natures, from the origin of the world foreseeing the fall and misery of both natures. But whether through life or through death, the office of Christ is final and the principal one, which restores to God all human creatures once, whether without sin or freed after the snares of the devil, and makes them capable of future salvation: so that those whom the Father gave to Him, He may not lose any of them. For the eternity of hell is not just under the power of mercy, and the invincible power to sin. For the eternity of punishments, which all parts of the church rightfully believe, cannot be in the depraved without their consent: but only in those who will extol themselves in their mind above all that is called God, after they have been both restored by Christ and adorned with all the graces with which a creature can be adorned on the way. Too many have already suffered punishments since the world was founded, afflicted by torments and despair, so that individual moments have been for them countless thousands of years, until the restorer is present in act to all, who has suffered more than for all: and then this may be fulfilled,
Not as the offense, so also the gift,
which is still false.
It is most certain, and must be, that just as the justice of God is eternal, so its subject...
