who are accused and excused through ignorance concerning His just death. For Judas, in renouncing Christ, was obeying the church, about which Christ had said to His own a little earlier: Do what they say. For except for a small gain, he was moved by a just piety toward the republic. Just as, therefore, individual things rise three times while the same elements remain in the composite, before one approaches the perfect judgment of old age: so it has been done in the body of the church, and will be done, until it happens in individuals, in individual ages, the digestion of both superior and inferior elements, and their preservation in the habit of perfect old age. This is what Job 33 hints at. He redeemed my soul so that it might see life in the light. Behold, God works all these things three times with man: so that He may lead his soul from hell, into the light, into the light of the living. For this God of ours has already three times liberated the souls of the dead from the pains of hell, and from the deep pit, literally at the end of the nature of scripture and of grace, so that all, if they all wish, may live the angelic life restored in full. But if not, let them know that God converts Judas over three crimes, but over the fourth against the Holy Spirit, He does not convert.
